BIO:

Stella Bella is one of the sweetest dachshunds you will ever meet!  She loves, and I mean LOVES to have her belly rubbed!  That truly is the highlight of her day!  She also loves to snuggle next to both humans and other dogs on the couch, but never demands attention.  She takes what she can get, and loves every minute of it!

Stella Bella came in as an owner surrender from the Nashville, TN area where the owner could no longer care for her.  At one point Stella Bella was up to 31 pounds, but the adopter got her down to 26 pounds before sending her to us.  They had her on thyroid meds, but we have since taken her off them because her T-4’s came back normal.  We are continuing to feed her Science Diet Metabolic dry food and she is steadily losing weight, about one-half to one pound per week.  We’d like to see her down to about 15 pounds.  We will be sending the reminder of her food with her when she gets adopted so she can continue to lose and then maintain once she’s where she should be.

Stella Bella is also housebroken (both doggie door and leash trained).  At night she is content to sleep in a doggie bed, as long as she can be in the same room with you.  Whatever room you are in she’s happy to tag along.  Stella Bella gets along with all the dachshunds in the foster home, and is actually playing some.  Now that she’s has lost most of the extra weight, she has a lot more energy.

We’d like to see Stella Bella go to someone that understands the importance of not feeding too many (or any) treats, and no people food so she can stay slim and trim once she loses the last bit of weight.

Please consider the 5-7 year range when adopting.  They are usually more calm, housebroken, and content to wait for you to come home from work (the younger dogs get bored more easily).  Also, dachshunds can live to be 16-18 years old, so that’s still many years you’d have to get and give love!

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
