BIO:  Sugar came from a shelter in Northern Alabama, where she was taken when found as a stray. Our wish list for this beautiful girl includes:

  1. A fenced yard
  2. No apartments or high rises
  3. Another dog to cuddle and play with
  4. Someone who is home a lot because she loves her people

Sugar is just the sweetest girl, she loves to play with other young dogs and loves to chase birds flying through the yard and that's why she has to have a fenced yard. She loves it when you sit down and she can lay beside you in your chair or on the couch covered up with a blanket of course. She does need to be fed separately because she doesn't like sharing food. She is house-trained.

If you will notice in the pictures she is holding one foot up... that's because there is nerve and tendon damage. She came from the shelter that way and we have no idea what happened. We tried physical therapy and laser therapy with no success. Then we tried a custom designed brace hoping to stretch that tendon out. She didn't tolerate the brace well. Sugar's orthopedist, physical therapist, and prosthetic designer have tried to help her but nothing has worked. So for now she gets around on three legs, but does use the bad leg to balance herself with.

She cannot use a lot of steps but does use a ramp at the foster mom’s house.

If you are interested in her and would like to reach out to her foster mom please do so, she'd love to hear from you. Or fill out your online adoption application to start the process of taking her home!

More about Sugar in MD

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Good with Kids, Requires a yard, Leashtrained, Cratetrained

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
