BIO UPDATE (11/26/2020):  Lazarus is doing remarkably well after completing his physical therapy. We think he is faster now. He still needs more work on his potty training but will use a doggie door with ease. He has an accident every so often, but he continues to improve. With continued training, patience and a consistent schedule, he'll get even better.

Lazarus is such a sweet dog and loves to be with you. He will follow you everywhere. He so deserves to find someone who will love him unconditionally!

BIO: Lazarus came from a breeder who surrendered him along with 6 other pups. He had back surgery on October 1st.  He came through the surgery with flying colors and is already walking normally. Although he is doing remarkably, he will still need to be monitored so that he does not re-injure his back. As with all dachshunds, he should not climb stairs or jump off of furniture. He is a very head strong dog and if you leave him on the couch, he will jump off to be with you.

Lazarus loves being with his foster fur siblings. He has 2 brothers and a sister and gets along great with all of them. It is best that he has a brother or sister as when he is alone, he cries. Sadly, as with a lot of breeder dogs, when we gave him a dental, he lost all his teeth except one bottom canine but the positive side of this is that you’ll save a lot of money on dentals! He has no problem eating dry dog food but it must be small kibbles. Oh, and he has one blue eye and one brown eye, very striking!

Lazarus has had physical therapy, which ended in the beginning of November.  He is ready for his forver home!

These are our must haves for sweet Lazarus:

  • A fenced yard
  • Someone home a lot to help him finish up his housetraining
  • Another dog to keep him company and play with him
  • No apartments or high rises because just like other dachshunds, he likes to announce to the world that he’s around

If you are interested in Lazarus, please fill out our online adoption application, right away or he’ll be with his furever family already!

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
