Won’t you please give Augustus a home? Don’t pass him by because he’s “too old” or “he’s not beautiful enough”. Augustus has a lot to give to some lucky person or family. This boy is so sweet and loving. Just because he has some age on him doesn’t mean he can’t sit on you lap, give you his un-divided attention, be happy your home, keep you company or listen to your problems without criticism. No he’s not pretty to look at but if you had a hard life you wouldn’t look so good either. Augustus just appeared one day sound a sleep in the middle of someone’s yard. The woman who found him actually thought he had died but he was just sleeping all tightly curled up. For days she watched as Augustus would sleep for 90% of the day then get up and relieve himself them go back to sleep. Every morning the women expected Augustus to go back home but after a while realized he had more then likely been dumped or wandered up. You could just tell by the condition of Augustus that this boy had a hard life and perhaps a life out on his own. Because of the horrible condition of his teeth, neglect and poor nourishment the initial tests given to Augustus were off the charts, we weren’t sure what we were dealing with as far as health issues. First step was to start Augustus on a good nutritious food and plenty of vitamins. Full body x-rays were called for first to see if we were dealing with any masses or enlarged organs. His heart was slightly enlarged but that could have been due to the bacteria from his teeth draining daily into his stomach or just from age. His teeth were the next step which was causing him a great deal of pain and also a contributing factor in the test’s giving false readings. Just think of all the bacteria he was swallowing on a daily basis. About half of his teeth had already rotted away and the two front canines were so bad they caused fistulas right into his sinus cavities. Due to the severity of the infection there was no choice but to remove all of Augustus’s remaining teeth. One of his rear legs is stiff from an old injury. From the looks of the x-rays his leg was broken but never mended by a vet, so it healed poorly. After a battery of test’s and surgery to be neutered and teeth cared for it turns out nothing major is wrong with Augustus. He just needed a little TLC and some veterinary care. To see Augustus today you would not believe he was the same dog found a month ago. He feels so much better now that he no longer is in pain from his teeth and eating canned food. His tail wags because he’s got a warm place to lay his head at night. He no longer sleeps the majority of the day away and would rather saunter around the backyard soaking up the sun. Even more heartwarming is seeing Augustus playing with some of the younger dogs. Augustus is great with other dogs large and small. He would also be good with young children and even cats. He is current on all his vaccines, recently neutered, micro chipped and on heartworm prevention. If you can offer a home where Augustus can live out his remaining years in comfort please consider adopting Augustus. Please e-mail his foster parents at oscarbcsg@sprintmail.com or fill out the on-line adoption application and specify you are interested in Augustus.Preference will be given to North Carolina applicants but applications from South Carolina and Virginia will also be considered.
More about AUGUSTUS
Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
