Hi, my name is Jake!  I was surrendered to a shelter in Kentucky but then I was rescued!  Now I live with my foster family in Northern Virginia.  My foster family says I wasn't in the best shape when I arrived.  You see, I had to have a lot of teeth pulled, I had a growth removed from my front left paw, and I weighed 25.5 lbs!  It was hard for me to even move.  Now, my paw is almost completely healed, and I'm on my way to being slim and trim (as of 9/13 I'm down to 21.8 pounds).  I have to say, I think I'm looking pretty good!  My foster family also says I'm a GREAT dog!  

I'm a little shy at first but I warm up quickly.  I get along with other dogs, I don't bark much at all, I'm house trained, and I'm SUPER mellow and laid back.  I LOVE belly rubs, toys, and just relaxing but I'm very happy to take a nice walk too!  I also love the beach (check out my video).

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
