BIO (01/27/2018):  Toby is a friendly little guy who was turned in to rescue when his owner could no longer care for him.  Before he came to rescue, he spent most of his time in a crate.  Toby's owner said he was 16 years old, but both his vet and foster mom agree that he is no more than 12.  Toby lost 14 teeth during his dental cleaning, but will have no trouble eating dry food once he has healed.  Toby loves to eat, so his new owner will need to be sure to keep him on a healthy diet.

Despite all of the time he spent in a crate, Toby doesn't mind being crated.  He often hangs out in there with the door open.  He spends most of his time free in the house.  He will usually bark at the door when he wants to go out.  He will also bark when he is hungry or if you are slow putting on his leash.  He is otherwise quiet in the house.

Toby is friendly, but does bark at strangers when he first meets them.  He does well on a leash and enjoys walks around the neighborhood.  He gets along well with other dogs and would be happiest with a dog friend to snuggle with.  He has not been around cats, but we can see how he does if needed.  He would love to sleep with his people, but does fine in a dog bed with a dog friend and a blanket.

Toby is a laid back little fellow with a cute personality!  He would be a great addition to a low-key household!

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
