He came to rescue when his family, who loved him very much, went through a major life change and could no longer care for him properly. He is one of the most beautiful dachshunds I have ever seen. His color is very striking and his coat is very soft and luxurious. And he has personality plus! He's extremely loving and sweet and he always wants to give kisses right on the mouth. He is very much a velcro dog and wants to be with you at all times, even in the bathroom! He is a very active boy, so daily walks and playtimes are an absolute must! He is all boy and will go out of his way 20 feet to bust a mud puddle wide open. He loves water and will jump in the bathtub every time you go in the bathroom. He lived with a 6 year old in his previous home, but his owner said that at times he could be snippy with him, so I'm going to suggest gentle, calm children over 8. He is a barker and has a bit of separation anxiety. He doesn't destroy anything, he just vocalizes. So, probably no apartment or condo families. He gets along great with dogs and cats and even completely ignores my birds and hamster (though I wouldn't trust him unsupervised with them). He walks well on a leash, absolutely loves going for car rides, and is about 80% housetrained. We are working hard on this. He will be a year old in October and has a pretty large umbilical hernia, which will be repaired during his neuter surgery. He is heartworm negative and on Heartgard Plus. He is also on Frontline Plus for flea/tick prevention. Don't pass up this wonderful guy...he will make some lucky family a fabulous companion. AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
