BEING FOSTERED IN MIDDLE GA

Otto came to us from a family where he was misunderstood. They allowed him to think he was the pack leader in the home and this caused him to have behavior problems. He has been with his foster family for about 8 months now and has blossomed into a very sweet, goofy, fun loving little man. He is definitely all dachshund; very stubborn at times. He has an alpha dog personality so his new family will have to make sure he understands who is boss. In Otto's new home, he will require structure. At his foster home, some of the structure that is involved in a normal day is; he is not allowed on the furniture, has to sit and wait politely for his food, sleeps in a crate at night, and must always walk like a gentleman when on a leash. With a family that does not give him rules to follow and structure then he will be a dog with issues, but with a family that does give him rules and structure he is an AMAZING dog. He will still need to be reminded at times who is boss for his whole life. His most favorite game is chase, but, he likes to be the one being chased! He will even tag you as if to say "you're it!" and run all over the place. Like most dachshunds he LOVES squeaky toys and when invited on the couch he LOVES to snuggle. When you pick him up he likes to lay his head on your chest. His latest adventure was to the beach and he was a very well behaved boy (on his leash) and loved running down the beach with his foster family and digging in the sand. Otto will need to go to a home that is experienced with dachshunds and willing to give him the structure that he needs. He does well with cats and likes to play with them and does well with other dogs. His foster mom works at a doggie daycare and he loves going and playing with his friends. He will be 4 years old this October, is neutered, and up to date on all of his vaccines.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
