She was surrendered to a shelter in Alabama for unknown reasons. She is a playful, happy sweet dog with lots of love to give (and kisses too!). She plays fetch and loves to sleep in the big people bed. She has shown herself to be mostly potty trained although has a tendency to hold it for a long time (probably due to being crated for extensive periods of time) and should be offered the opportunity to go out consistently until she is used to a new schedule in her new home. She has shown a fear of men by backing away from them and barking a couple times but if allowed to go to them will eventually sit on their lap and definitely enjoys a nice petting session. She gets along fine with cats and other dogs as long as the other dog doesn’t have alpha issues. I recommend her being in a home where there won’t be more than two dogs as she enjoys being with her people and probably won’t want to share much attention. She should not go to a home with children as she has proven to be protective of her adult when small children come around. She plays great with the kids until she is sitting on the adults lap and a small child approaches. Then she sends out a warning by snapping. The best scenario for her would be a home with a couple with no kids, possibly a cat or another dog to keep her company and somewhere to call home forever. This girl has been shifted around a lot and needs somewhere to dig in her heels and stay for good. A fenced in yard or good long walks will be required for this energetic girl. She is a real sweet dog please email helpsaveanimals@charter.net with any questions about this girl and I will do my best to answer. We have several transporters that for a fee will bring the dog as close to you as possible up the Eastern seaboard. A home visit is required on all adoptions. We also micro chip all our dogs and must pass the cost on to the adopter. It is only $10.00. Thank you for your interest in a rescue. To fill out an application for this dog please go to www.ssdr.org and fill out an app. we will be in touch shortly to do a phone interview. It is also best to have a dog in mind that you would like to adopt or if you don't please let us know that you'd like a dog that best fits your lifestyle. Keep in mind that we are all volunteers and have other obligations so please let your references and vet know that we will be calling to vai all info that you put on your application. If you use two vets then please let us know that so we get all info on your dog possible to determine if you are a suitable home for our dog. If you do not let us know these things this maybe the factor that you will be turned down to adopt one of our dogs.

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
