She was rescued from a shelter where her owners brought her when a step-child became allergic. Tootsie was extremely frightened at the shelter and cowered in the back of her cage and began to try to nip anyone who tried to hold her. She once had a warm, comfortable home, but it was taken away from her and she didn't know how to react. Since coming into our foster program, Tootsie has done wonderfully. But it will still take a special person to give her the time and opportunity to adjust. She is house-trained and loves to sleep in the big bed. She has gotten along with her two foster brothers but a home without other dogs would be best as the new owner will need to devote special time to her in order for her to feel safe and secure. She is 100% a lap dog and just wants to be with you whether it’s watching television, sitting with you as you explore the Web or go for car rides. Tootsie loves to play with her ball and will fetch. She does bark at strangers and a quiet household without children or a lot of activity will also be preferred. Tootsie feels safe and loved in her foster home and time will be needed for her to get to know and trust her new owner. Is Not Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
