BIO (7/29/2019): Moses came from a hoarding situation in East Tennessee. When he came to us he hid in any place he could find. He was terrified. In just a couple days, he realized what he was missing out on. He slowly watched his foster dog siblings and saw how much fun they had playing. He knew he had to be part of this. He started to play with the other dogs and with all the dog toys there are in every room, even outside. He now has no fear of the other dogs and runs, plays, and sleeps with them with no issues. He went from a tail tucked, scared little dog to tail wagging, happy dog.
Humans are another story. We do not know what happened to this little guy, but he is so afraid of humans. We are making progress, though. We are giving him space to come to us on his own. We have to chase him around the table a few times to catch him…and we give him as much love as possible. He is getting closer and closer to coming to us for pets. If we hold out our hands to him, he will come and lick fingers, but not let us pet him yet. He will need someone willing to work with him on trusting humans.
Moses is a very happy boy. He uses the doggie door to go outside. He slept in his crate for the first few nights, and then realized he likes the big bed better. We have tried to teach him being on the leash, but it would work better once he realizes he can trust us. He must have a home with a fenced yard, as he will run from fear. A home with another dog would be the best. He does love to play with toys, but playing with another dog is better.
Moses will need someone that can spend the time with him to teach him humans aren’t all bad. He needs someone with patience to teach him and guide him to accept love from humans. He is missing out on a lot of kisses! He will get there in time.
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
