Have you ever seen a cuter face? Tootsie is a very tiny, 6-month-old little girl that needs an exceptional forever home that will love and take special care for her forever.  Tootsie has had a difficult “puppyhood” and has endured 2 surgeries to repair her liver. She was first diagnosed with a liver shunt, which was repaired. But shortly after her surgery, she experienced similar symptoms, which required a second surgery to see if she had developed another liver shunt. She had not, but was diagnosed with a medical disordered called microvascular dysplasia (MVD), which affects her liver. For the remainder of Tootsie’s life, this condition, MVD, will have to be managed with a special diet of prescription dog food and a soluble fiber called Lactulose.  Also, it is best that she eat small meals throughout the day to ensure her system is not overloaded processing nutrition.  Her liver is unable to process various proteins and she must be kept on this strict diet to ensure she remains healthy and symptom free. Her food is about $2.40/can and the Lactulose is about $20/pint. But she only weighs about 5 pounds, so it doesn’t take much!!! Tootsie’s outgoing personality and love for life makes her special needs pale in comparison to the love and puppy kisses you’ll get in return.

Tootsie is playful and friendly, enjoys other dogs to play with, and is crate trained and 99% housetrained. She is full of energy and having a big time and enjoying being a puppy now that she is feeling better. She will never get very big---she only weighs 5 pounds now and will remain “pocket-sized” forever.  She is the most beautiful dark chocolate color with an almost black overlay on her body and has tan markings. She’s got long, spindle legs like she’s just not grown into them yet and the most unique cowlick down the back of her neck, which adds to unique cute-ness! Tootsie will do best in a home with small canine companions that will not be mean or aggressive towards her---she’s too small to defend herself! Or, she’d be fine as an only child, as long as you’ll play with her! She also needs a consistent schedule where she can eat small meals frequently throughout the day and consistently get the Lactulose that keeps her digestion working well. She loves people and loves to visit with everybody, but she needs a home with either adults-only, or a family with older children that can understand the importance of her special diet and know how to handle a delicate little girl. She has no personality “issues”—she’s just a puppy! She needs housetraining consistently encouraged, but has very few accidents at her foster home. Tootsie does well in her crate and fusses only briefly when her people leave her alone. Tootsie enjoys being outside in the sunshine and playing in the yard but needs supervision while outside just because she’s so tiny she could easily escape from just about any fence.

If Tootsie is calling YOUR NAME, and you are able and willing to accommodate her special needs and LOVE her forever, apply for her now! She still has a few weeks of recovery remaining and must be spayed be placed on heartworm prevention prior to adoption. But, she’ll be ready to be somebody’s center of attention very soon.  If you have questions about Tootsie, email her foster mom at smburmei@comcast.net . Also, we encourage you to Google canine microvascular dysplasia (MVD) to fully understand her condition.

Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.

More about Tootsie2

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
