BIO:  Sky came from Western Kentucky when the second owner didn’t want her because they said she was not house trained. The original owner didn’t want her back either, so we were contacted to take her. Sky is a sweet girl! She’s on the shy side and doesn’t care for you to tower over her but if you sit and then coax her to you, she’ll let you pick her up. Sky's must-haves include:

  • No apartments or high-rises
  • A fenced yard
  • Another young small dog for her to play with and keep her company if you have to go out
  • Someone who is home a lot (not just during Covid 19) to housetrain her and help her be more social
  • Someone who has lots of patience

Sky has just moved up to her foster home in New York so give her time to settle in before you think about if you are ready for this challenge of helping her to be a pet. We think whoever the first owner was must not have spent any time with her because of her fears. We don’t want to paint a scary picture, but she is going to need you (potential adopter) to have lots of patience. If you don't, you’ll end up getting frustrated and that won’t help her or you and you might just return her to us and that would not be good for her.

What we can tell you is when she gets to know you and understands you mean her no harm, she is just the sweetest little girl! And talk about long and lean! She is a little underweight by about 2 pounds, but with her long body the new owner will want to keep her on the thin side so she doesn’t have back issues. And absolutely no jumping or doing stairs!

============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============

If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed above.  They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.

We welcome out of state and Canadian adoptions, but we will not ship any dog via cargo.  You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport.  If you choose transporting by either volunteers through our organization or by paid transporter, there will be an additional $45 fee added for the required Health Certificate.

We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states.  If you have an issue with this, you need to take this up with your legislatures.

To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page.  Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.

If you are interested in adopting this Dachshund please review Read Before You Adopt and then you can complete an Application.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and MidWest. We just can't get them from one Coast to the other but some day we hope to have enough volunteers to do that as well.  For now, please look for dogs on your coast.

More about Sky in NJ

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
