BIO:  Stark is a six-and-a-half-year-old Dorkie (Dachshund/Yorkshire Terrier mix).  He is a friendly little guy who loves to be with people. He has his summer haircut and when his coat grows out it will be longer, like a yorkie. Stark's wish list includes:

  • Can be an only dog or with other small dogs
  • Someone to continue working with him to maintain potty-training
  • To be leash walked or have a 6 foot or higher fenced yard
  • No cats, birds, or small animals
  • No apartments or high-rises

Stark came to rescue with his brother when his owner entered the service. He is a little shy at first, but warms up quickly and will soon be your shadow.

Stark has longer legs and is able to easily jump over a 4 foot fence. He will need a home where he is leash walked several times a day or there is a 6 foot or higher fence.

He gets along well with the 2 senior dogs in his foster home. He does best with dogs near his size and smaller. He seems to be intimidated by large dogs and barks at them. Stark walks well on a leash and enjoys long walks. He is interested in cats, squirrels, and especially birds that we see, so he would not do well in a home with any of those as pets. He enjoys meeting new people. He is nervous around very young children, but is fine with older children who know to be gentle with him.

Stark is a sweet dog that loves attention. He would be fine as an only dog if his owner is home a lot. He has been sleeping quietly in a crate at night with no accidents. He would prefer to sleep in the Big Bed with his people though. Stark is making excellent progress on his potty-training.  He did some marking at first, but with frequent trips outside and vigilance on the part of foster mom, he has improved. His new family will need to keep an eye on him, especially at first.

In the house, he mostly follows foster mom around or sits in a dog bed nearby. He is pretty quiet, but will bark a little when left in the house or when he hears unfamiliar noises.

Stark is a handsome fellow who would love a new home where he can spend time with his people and enjoy walks or a securely fenced yard.

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
