BIO UPDATE (1/8/2021):  Coco has been in her Vermont foster home for less than a week and she has come such a long way. She now has the nickname of "Coco-Moco Chino". This represents not only her chocolatey color, but her sweet personality. Coco still needs socialization with people so that she can learn that her days of being mistreated are behind her. She is learning a lot from her two foster brothers which supports the need for her to be adopted into a home that has another small breed dog that she can continue to learn from and spend time with. Coco has also made great strides in learning how to play. She has a squeaky toy that she enjoys carrying around and sharing the new found noises it has.

Coco is going to make a wonderful pet to the right family that is ready to help a sweet girl who has been dealt a very ugly hand and is still very nervous of everything around her. I am hopeful that she will soon come out of her shell and shine into the beautiful dog that she was meant to be.

BIO:  Coco’s story is not pretty. She showed up on someone’s porch in Alabama and they contacted another rescue to take her, and they in turn contacted us because they were full.

When we looked at her front teeth, they were all worn down due to chewing on either a wire kennel or cage in order to escape her prison. We can only guess why she wanted to escape. We know Coco has been abused but she still wags her tail at us because she knows we won’t hurt her. However, she does get nervous when we try to pick her up. This little girl is only 2 years old, maybe less, and has already lost all of the teeth in the front of her mouth due to exposed nerves. How very, very sad, but we promised her this won’t happen again so our wish-list for her includes:

  • A fenced yard
  • Another dog or two to help her with her confidence (smaller dogs not big dogs)
  • Someone home a lot to show her love and patience
  • No apartments or high-rises

We don’t know how long Coco suffered in pain with her teeth but now that her mouth is healed, she feels so much better. This girl will give you all the love she has, and her past experiences will soon be forgotten with your love and patience!

Good with Dogs, Good with Older/Considerate Kids Only, Good with Adults, Likes to play with toys, Needs a companion animal

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
