BIO:  Opal was rescued from a terrible puppy mill by another rescue and adopted out.  Her new owner decided not to keep Opal so she came to AADR. Opal is the sweetest little dog!  She has none of the scared behaviors usually associated with puppy mill dogs.  When she went for her dental cleaning, her teeth were in such bad shape that she ended up losing them all.  She doesn't mind a bit and has no problem eating dry dog food that has been soaked in water to soften it.  Opal is in excellent health and you won't have to worry about getting her teeth cleaned.

Opal would be fine as an only dog or with other small dogs.  She gets along well with the 2 senior dachshunds in her foster home and the neighbor dachshunds we meet on walks.  She is however, afraid of big dogs.  She has not been around cats, but ignores the ones we see on walks, so she would probably be okay with one.  Most cats are bigger than her!  She has not been around small children, but would be fine with older children who understand that they must be gentle with her.

Opal enjoys short walks around the neighborhood as long as the weather is nice.  She is not a fan of cold, rain, or snow.  She will go out for a potty break, but wants to come right back in.  She would enjoy a fenced yard, but would be fine with several short walks each day.  Opal rides well in the car.

Our must haves for this beautiful little girl include:

  • Fenced yard recommended
  • No big dogs
  • No children under the age of 10 years
  • No apartments or high-rises (this is firm)

When nobody is at home Opal stays loose in the house.  She mostly just snoozes in a dog bed.  She will use a pee pad if she is not able to get outside.  At night she has been sleeping with her foster mom in the big bed.  She disappears under the covers and reappears in the morning.  She will stay in a crate and will sometimes go in if the door is open, but definitely prefers to be with people.

Opal is a pretty little sweetheart who would love to be your new sidekick!

Good with Some Dogs (No large dogs), Good with Older/Considerate Kids Only, Good with Adults, Does Good in the Car, Leashtrained, Cratetrained, Even-tempered

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
