Our wish list for little Basil includes:

  • Fenced yard required
  • No big dogs
  • No children under the age of 10 years
  • No apartments or high rises (this is firm)

Basil is a terrific little dog! When he went for his dental cleaning, he lost a few teeth, but has no problem eating dry dog food. He has a mild heart murmur, which is not unusual for a dog his age.

Basil would be fine as an only dog or with other small dogs. He gets along well with the senior dachshunds in his foster home and the neighborhood dogs we meet on walks. He ignores the cats we see, so he would probably be okay with one in the house. Basil is fine with children and would be happiest with older children who understand that they must be gentle with him. He also rides well in a car.

Basil enjoys walks around the neighborhood as long as the weather is nice. He would enjoy a fenced yard, but would also be okay with daily walks. He sometimes howls when he is first left in the morning and when he hears people outside, so he would not be a good choice for a townhouse or condo with very close neighbors.

Because he is such a good dog, Basil has not spent much time in a crate. When nobody is home, he stays loose in the house. He is well housebroken and will use a pee pad if needed. Basil does fine all night and during the day while foster mom is at work. He just needs to go out first thing in the morning, in the afternoon when foster mom gets home, and before bed. At night, he has been sleeping under a blanket on the people bed and he sleeps quietly all night.

Basil is a handsome and friendly little fellow who would love to be your new pal!

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
