BIO:  Sugar came from a shelter in Alabama when her owners passed away. She was very happy to be bailed out and her tail wags all the time. Her 3 favorite things are her people, her bed, and her dinner. Sugar's name suits her well, she is the sweetest little dog.

Our must haves for this sweet girl include:

  • A fenced yard
  • Another dog just to keep her company if you have to be out but if you are home a lot then it could be just you and her
  • No apartments or high rises

Sugar is a pretty black and tan dappled girl with a little bit of blue in her eye. She is in excellent health and seems younger than 10. She lost a few teeth when she had her dental cleaning, but is fully recovered and happily eats dry dog food. Sugar loves to eat, so her owner will need to limit treats to keep her at a healthy weight.

She loves to go for walks and explore the neighborhood and is very friendly with people of all ages. Sugar checked out the neighborhood cat and lost interest when he walked away, so she would be fine with a cat in her home. Sugar gets along with other dogs too. She will gladly keep your fenced yard free from squirrels.

Sugar is crate trained, but is a good girl and has not been crated in her foster home. She hangs out in her dog bed during the day while foster mom is at work and is ready to go out for a potty and walk before dinner. Sugar will bark to let you know when she needs to go out. She sleeps quietly in her dog bed at night or would be very happy to sleep with her people.

If you are looking for a sweet little walking buddy, Sugar is the girl for you!

============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============

If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed above.  They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.

We welcome out of state and Canadian adoptions, but we will not ship any dog via cargo.  You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport.  If you choose transporting by either volunteers through our organization or by paid transporter, there will be an additional $55 fee added for the required Health Certificate.

We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states.  If you have an issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures.

To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page.  Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Older/Considerate Kids Only, Good with Adults, Requires a yard, Leashtrained, Cratetrained, Affectionate, Even-tempered

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
