BIO UPDATE (5/28/2021):  A few words from Arnie aka the "Big Guy":

When I first came to AADR I was scared and shy and not very social. I am a little scared of new situations but not snappy at all. Since being in my foster home, I have really become part of the pack. They have dogs as little as me and as large as a Golden Retriever and a Shepard. Cats, well let’s just say I'm not fond of them but I do well with them. I'm okay with children and I like them, but they should be 7 years or older and understand and respect dogs.

I don't mind the crate, but I'd rather not be in one. I'm 80% house broken. (No one should say a dog is 100% housebroken because accdidents may happen during the transition to my new home.)

I am looking for my forever where I will be loved and well taken care of, not just a pet but a family member. Please continue to read my original bio below. There is some great info about me there.

Thanks for listening! Hope to hear from you soon!

BIO:  Arnie came to rescue from a shelter in North Carolina where he had been left by a hoarder.  Arnie is a sweet boy who was not well socialized.  He is frightened by new situations, but is not at all snappy.

Our must haves for cutie pie Arnie include:

  • A fenced yard required
  • No children under the age of 12 years
  • No apartments or high rises (this is firm)

Arnie would be happiest in an adult home or with older children who understand that they must be very gentle and patient with him.  Arnie is learning to walk on a leash and has made excellent progress. He is still not a fan of leash walks so he will need a securely fenced yard.  A dog door will help him with his house training. Arnie gets along well with other small dogs and another small friendly dog would help him get over his timidity.  His attitude about cats is unknown.  Arnie is crate trained and sometimes hangs out in a crate with the door open.  He also enjoys being under a blanket in a dog bed.

Arnie has had a rough life so far but with some time and patience, he will become a great little buddy!

============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============

If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed above.  They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.

We welcome out of state and Canadian adoptions, but we will not ship any dog via cargo.  You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport.  If you choose transporting by either volunteers through our organization or by paid transporter, there will be an additional $45 fee added for the required Health Certificate.

We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states.  If you have an issue with this, you need to take this up with your legislatures.

To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page.  Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.

If you are interested in adopting this Dachshund please review Read Before You Adopt and then you can complete an Application.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.

More about Arnie in VA

Good with Dogs, Good with Older/Considerate Kids Only, Good with Adults, Requires a yard, Cratetrained, Timid, Gentle

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
