BIO UPDATE (7/10/21):  Bernie has settled in comfortably at our home. He gets along well with my female pup. He loves being outside and going for walks, and he walks well on a leash.

Bernie loves his human - he will be at your side wherever you go! With that being stated, he needs a home where he is not left alone for long periods of time.

He is very protective of his home. Bernie needs a meet-n-greet outside of the gate with visitors first. After that, he’s your best friend! With his history, a home with no young children is a must. Bernie loves to cuddle! He also knows general commands. He is very loving and has a delightful personality.

Please consider giving Bernie his forever home that he so deserves. He is a great dog!!!

BIO:  Bernie was surrendered from an owner in Kansas when he was snappy with the toddler in the home. So Bernie will need to go to a home with children 10 years and older. Other than that, Bernie is a great boy! We think he would be fine being an only dog but he would also be okay with a female or a submissive male.

This boy has a gorgeous tail - it just flaps in the breeze like a flag! He likes being with his people and will follow you and help you with whatever you’re doing.

Our must haves for handsome Bernie include:

  • A fenced yard
  • No small children or grandchildren
  • Someone who can be home a lot or another small dog in the home (female or submissive male)
  • No apartments or high rises

Bernie has been rehomed a couple times so he needs someone who is going to keep him and take care of him for the rest of his days... could that be you?

============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshunds back or get bitten.

If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed above.  They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.

We welcome out of state and Canadian adoptions, but we will not ship any dog via cargo.  You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport.  If you choose transporting by either volunteers through our organization or by paid transporter, there will be an additional $55 fee added for the required Health Certificate.

We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states.  If you have an issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures.

To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page.  Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and MidWest. We just can't get them from one Coast to the other. Please look for dogs on your coast.
