BIO: First, I must say that I am so grateful to Tucker’s owner who chose to surrender him to AADR. They could have dropped him off anywhere, but chose to help Tucker find a forever home.
Tucker was a breeder dog for the majority of his life. This means he was not in a home; he was in a kennel. He was not socialized, he was not held, and most importantly, he was not taught how to be part of a family. Tucker will require someone willing to invest in him. He is not an easy dog. I have had him for almost two months and I still have to lay on the floor to get him to come to me. He is afraid of everything: loud noises, new faces and places, and even eating while I watch. But we have also experienced small daily breakthroughs. Tucker has learned to sleep in the bed with me and rest comfortability. He no longer spends his days in an x-pen. When he first came into rescue, he had sores on his feet from walking in the crate in circles. He no longer hides in the house. He sits with his family in the living room in his bed. Tucker loves his toys but will abandon them if another dog approaches. He is still very much in the fight or flight stage of his rehabilitation.
Our must-haves for this little guy include:
- A fenced yard attached to your home (non-negotiable)
- Someone with doxie experience willing to continue working with housetraining, leash walking, and socialization
- Children age 12 years or older
- Understanding adopting Tucker will not be easy, but will be incredibly rewarding
- No apartments or high-rises
Tucker is a beautiful dog, as you can see in his pictures. Because of his beauty, he was a very profitable breeder dog. I would love to talk with anyone willing to take this precious boy on, I know it will take a special family/person willing to adapt their lifestyle to his insecurities. Oh, he loves NETFLIX and cheerios! Please consider becoming Tucker’s first real family.
============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshunds back or get bitten.
If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed above. They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.
We welcome out of state and Canadian adoptions, but we will not ship any dog via cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. If you choose transporting by either volunteers through our organization or by paid transporter, there will be an additional $55 fee added for the required Health Certificate.
We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states. If you have an issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures.
To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page. Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and Midwest. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. Please look for dogs on your coast.
