If I could describe Buster in just a couple of words, I would say he is one of the most Sweet, Affectionate, and Loyal boys I have ever met. He has been through so much in his short little life and its obvious that he is very grateful to those who show him kindness.

Buster started his life out as a breeder dog. Once his owner became ill, life got even worse for him. He was confined to a small wire crate and forced to share his small space with other un-neutered males. When food time came, the strongest doxie got to eat and I believe, because of Buster's quiet spirit, he was left with a hungry belly many nights. Not only were his ribs and hips very obviously showing but he also has scars on his ears, legs and tummy where other dogs bit him if he tried to get some food. He also came wearing a shock/vibrate collar covered in bite marks from other dogs.

Finally, the owner decided to give up her dogs and gave them to a shelter. Thankfully, the shelter worker was very kind and did everything she could to contact rescue. Thats when Buster came from NC to live with his foster mom.  Dachshunds that come from this background often have fear or aggression issues. However, not only is Buster NOT aggressive but when I first met him, he ducked down on his belly when I went to pet him because he only has known harshness instead of kindness in his life. He was a great car rider and sat on my lap the whole way back to SC.

He has been in foster care for 3 weeks now and I am getting to see his true personality. Despite his rough past, he has discovered TOYS and loves to play!! He will run back and forth across the house with his favorite rope toy and make lots of happy noises. If he catches you looking at him, he'll drop his toy to come get some lovings!  He gets along great with my male 2 year old dachshund and my 2 year old sheltie mix. I even took him to an adoption event and he was super friendly to every dog and person that passed. However, because of his past, I recommend him not go to a home with an overly alpha dog as I think this may bring back some bad memories for him. He LOVES other dogs and needs a household where the dogs can help him come out of shell instead of dominating him back into it.

If Buster comes to live at your house, be prepared for lots of snuggles and a constant shadow. There is nothing Buster would rather do than to sit in your lap and get his ears scratched. In fact, he might not want me to tell you this, but if you pick him up and give him kisses on his head, he falls asleep right away and makes a happy purring sound.

Because Buster has lived his whole life in a cage, we are working on his house manners. He is coming along beautifully but will need someone who is patient and will continue to work with him. He hasn't chewed on any furniture while here and LOVES to sleep in the big bed with his person.  He will go potty outside if kept on a schedule. You will need to allow for a couple of weeks of adjustment time while he gets used to his new home.  It would be great for Buster to go to a home where someone is home a good portion of the time just because he loves being around people so much. But if not, he is good in his crate after some initial barking. Buster also needs to go to a home with at least 1 other dog. He has grown up with dogs as his only companion and I think he would be lonely without some buddies to play with. We are working on his leash training and he is getting used to it exceptionally fast! His home will need to have a very secure fenced in yard (or always have him on a leash) and a secure house. Buster has that special touch in finding a crack in the door or maybe a hole in the fence. He is so curious and wants to go exploring!

Did I mention that Buster is one handsome pooch?? I don't want to embarrass him but he has a beautiful shiny coat with all the perfect markings. He is very muscular and has a prance like he is walking down the runway. And lets not forget those eyes....its very hard to not just give him everything he wants when he gives you his puppy dog face!

If you adopt Buster, I promise you that no one will appreciate your love and devotion more than him! And he will return that with all of his heart! Won't you give Buster Brown a chance to know life as it was meant to be for a dachshund?

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
