Update: Buster is doing great in his foster home with his foster brothers. We have been working on walking on a leash and he has come leaps and bounds and walks pretty well on the leash but still always needs to be walked with his harness on. He seems to be all healed from his surgery but still needs to be watched with jumping off furniture so he does not hurt himself. He likes to be outside to sunbathe and run around but definitely needs a fenced in yard. Buster enjoys camping; he went on a trip to Montana with his foster family and loved it he just needs to be secured. He is a little timid around dogs that are bigger than him but is warming up although he loves to play and wrestle with his foster brothers. Buster loves to cuddle in bed with his foster family and be under the covers. He has a very strong prey drive so being off leash is not a good idea as he likes to take chase. Buster is a sweet, loving, and cuddly boy who just needs to find the right family for his needs, could it be you?
Buster has an adorable cowlick that starts almost at the back top of his head and goes down to his neck, it even changes direction in the middle- we call him our Rhodesian Ridgeback dachshund. Buster is just a fun little guy that loves to be near you and gets along with everyone. Do you have a place in your heart for Buster?
Buster is a young dog that seems pretty mellow for his age. Buster came from the shelter with a severe upper respiratory infection. For his first week or so he had his very own guest room with a humidifier running 24/7 at 75% humidity to make him all better. He hardly ever complained. Buster doesn’t bark much, instead he usually makes these cut little whiny noise like a little piglet when he wants you, is lonely or needs to go outside. He gets along very well with his foster brothers and sisters they play and all snuggle up together. Buster LOVES to sleep in the big bed burrowed under the covers in typical dachshund fashion. When he is sitting on your lap his favorite thing is to have the left side of his neck and chest rubbed and he will just melt right into you.
We have to keep him away from the cats as he seems to have a very high prey drive so a home with NO cats for him. Buster would do well with a family with older children to play with or even a single person that was home most of the time so they could play, ball go for walks or just hang out.
Buster is a great dog. He should be crated when leaving the home and not left out loose in a room so he doesn’t do any damage to his back like jump off of furniture etc. He’s a really good boy and will play with his toys or a chewy with some peanut butter while you are away.
Please consider taking Buster home FUREVER and he will kiss you to pieces for it!
Buster had life saving back surgery on November 22, 2010. Buster will needs to go to a home with no stairs and experienced Dachshund owners. BUSTER WILL ONLY BE ADOPTED OUT LOCALLY AND IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR TRANSPORT.

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
