Temperament/personality:

Spartacus is fun. He instigates a lot of play around here. He was given his name because of his fearless approach to embracing his new environment. He knows how to get everybody involved in a game of hide and chase. He’s gentle and caring; especially toward his brother Brutus, who seems to learn from his brother’s confidence. He’s a lap dog when given the option. He sleeps in some very goofy positions (like his brother Brutus) and he’s a joy to be around.

History:

Spartacus came to us with his six other brothers and sisters when they were five weeks old. Their mother Selena was turned into the Hohenwald, TN animal shelter. The puppies stayed at the shelter until they were five weeks old which is when the shelter notified AADR they had dachshund/beagle mix puppies.

Training:

Potty training:

Like his brothers and sisters, the focus at this time has been on potty training. He is 95% there. They are taken out each morning after waking to go to the bathroom and then fed. They play for the next two hours or so and have use of the dog door to go to the bathroom. We rarely have any accidents in the area of the home the dogs use. They are not given the run of the house so we can reinforce the lessons of potty training. We praise them endlessly when they use the bathroom outside. They respond very well to this training. We also take them outside at night before bed and encourage them to go to the bathroom. Again, we praise them a lot if they go to reinforce the message.

Dog door:

He uses the dog door and enjoys the freedom it offers. He knows to use it when he needs to go to the bathroom.

These puppies are very bright and will train easily.

Best environment:

Spartacus will be fine in a home with another dog or one without. He isn’t a dominant dog. Most puppies, including Spartacus are best placed with older children (above the age of seven) if there are children in the home at all.

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
