BIO: Please read the complete Bio on Mozart so that you are aware of his past.
Mozart came from an animal hoarding case in Alabama. When authorities entered the home, they encountered 80+ animals living in squalid conditions. Almost half of that number had to be euthanized due to their health. This guy did not have a great start in life and it will take a long time and lots of love and attention to bring out all of the potential Mozart has inside. He is a survivor. After clawing his way through life for a couple of years, don't expect that 2 weeks or 2 months are going to completely change him. He will need to gain your trust and you will need to accept that he is always going to be unique in certain aspects. However, we are confident that with the right person(s) and in the proper environment, Mozart is going to reward his people with watching him mature and seeing how love can make a difference in a life.

After Mozart arrived in AADR, we worked with him for a while before determining the he needed care and training above the normal level. AADR reached out to Highland Canine Training Center and they accepted him into their Second Chance Program. Through their efforts we believe Mozart has a chance in life! He was adopted, but he was returned due to some aggression issues. He returned to Highland Canine and has shown great progress, in fact, he is ready for his forever home.

It is important that his forever home understands his past and his limitations. He will need consistent care and attention to ensure that he is handled in a manner that does not create more hurdles for him. This may scare some people away, but we want the best chance for Mozart and he deserves a home that can provide consistent and caring love to get him through his issues.

Here is the latest progress report on Mozart:

He is doing well in his training except for the occasional accident he has in the house. He is doing well with being picked up and he will walk up to you to be petted, especially in the mornings after he has been in his crate sleeping. So, he does want attention from people but he prefers dogs still. I think he is ready to go to a home with more that one dog and someone who knows he is not going to be a lap dog. He is perfectly happy running around with other dogs just a little reserved when it comes to people. I walk him every morning with two of my dogs and he is great, doesn't pull and pays no attention to passing dogs or people.

Mozart will come when called, but being held/picked up is something he needs to develop trust in the person first, then it is only for a short time. He likes to sleep in the big bed but is also happy to sleep in a doggy bed in the same room. He does not like to be crated, but is content in a crate when traveling. He will gently take a treat from our hands.
Mozart loves toys and loves to play with his foster brothers and sisters. He likes males and females, both small and large. He barks at the neighbor's cats and we are not sure if he would get along with one in the household. Speaking of barking, he does bark at noises in the city. In a quiet country setting he hardly makes a sound.

He would do best in a home with a fenced yard for running and at least one other playful dog in the family (any adopter should have at least one additional dog that can help Mozart be comfortable and further develop appropriate skills). Mozart is not for young children and needs an experienced dachshund owner to help him continue to learn to trust. He will need a consistent schedule to continue his work on house training.

He is looking for a home that can truly help him to flourish as a companion animal. That is not going to be an event, but a process. If you are looking for a trophy dog to show off, then he is not the dog for you. If you are looking for an animal that you can invest love and time in and accept that the rewards will be small while he develops trust and understanding then you might be the home for Mozart. This will be a journey and journeys are accomplished by small steps and many stops and starts. We are confident the you and Mozart will both reach that destination of love and companionship together with patience and love. Are you up for the challenge? Can you help Mozart beyond his past and demonstrate the power of second chances?

If you have questions about this dog please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed above.  If shipping by volunteers through our organization or paid transporter, there will be an additional $35 Fee for the required Health Certificate.
We will not adopt into the state of CT or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states. If you have an issue with this you need to take this up with your legislatures. We are working hard to get approved to bring dogs into the state of NH and until that happens we cannot adopt to anyone in that state either.

Please Read Before You Adopt to learn more about transportation options.  If you are interested in adopting this Dachshund please Read Before You Adopt and Fill Out an Application. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast or up and down the West Coast. We just can't get them from one Coast to the other but some day we hope to have enough volunteers to do that as well for now please look for dogs on your coast.Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport.

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
