He is a light red color with light brown eyes and a cute brown nose. He gets along nicely with the other dachshunds and dachshund mixes in his foster home as well as the bigger dogs he has met. Rocky enjoys running and playing so he would appreciate long walks, a fenced yard, or frequent trips to a dog park. He walks well on a leash. Rocky also enjoys sitting in a lap or lying in a dog bed with a chew toy. He is a little shy when he first meets new people, but after a few minutes he is very affectionate. At dinnertime he sits and waits patiently for his food bowl to be set down. Rocky spends the night in his crate and after a few whines settles in and sleeps until morning. He would be very happy to sleep with his people. When nobody is at home Rocky stays in a confined area with the other dogs and does fine. He is mostly housebroken and is learning quickly. He will use a puppy pad if there is nobody available to take him out.
Rocky would do best with older children who understand that they need to be gentle with a small dog and that he will sometimes need his own space. He lived with a cat in his previous home and they were good buddies. Rocky does well with other dogs, but would be fine as an only dog too.
If you are looking for a graceful walking companion and lap warmer, Rocky is the boy for you!

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
