BIO:

Sophie

Sophie is a special little dog and she needs a special home.  She desperately needs a special person to call her own.

This person will be patient and kind, diligent and consistent, calm but firm, soft spoken but able to scold when needed and most of all, full of love.  This person must be smart…smart enough to recognize a good investment….with a lot of patience and some time, Sophie will be the best friend one could ever have.  She is going to need a calm, stable environment where she feels safe and loved everyday.  Sophie’s owner will need to be unselfish and allow Sophie to progress at bonding and socializing at her own pace.  She will need to be protected from “helter skelter” of excess people until she is more secure; her owner will need to accept Sophie as she is—beautiful and shy---and be willing to stick with Sophie if that shyness does not go away.

Sophie is a beautiful piebald lady doxie whose coat is white, gray and tan.  At a distance, she looks black and white, but she is actually white with gray in large patches and small spots with tan accents.  She has a beautiful face which is mostly dark gray with tan above her eyes and below her jawline.  She also has one gray leg with tan mingling in.  Sophie’s distinct coloring makes her quite beautiful.

Sophie is quite shy and takes her time to warm up.  No aggression has been seen, even with food.  She gets along well with other dogs, but noisily chases the cats.  She is learning to play with toys and has learned that she likes “cookies” (animal crackers) and knows that word.

Sophie likes to be close to her person once she is comfortable.  She is not accustomed to being picked up and stiffens with fright; soft words and light touch calm her down.  She will snuggle with her person on the couch, but does best if she is allowed to approach on her own, then she “molds right into” your body and naps.

Sophie will meet her owner with her little happy dance.  She will eventually approach you to be touched, starting with licking your fingers.  She will slowly allow less distance and more contact, but one must be patient, she cannot be rushed or progress will not only stop, but actually regress.

Sophie will need a completely fenced yard that is secure.  She is shy enough that she cannot be “out” at all, her shyness translates into fear for her and she takes flight.  She is doing well adjusting to a halter, cannot be led only with a collar and is working on leash training.  Sophie is very smart, she’ll “get it”, but it will take time and a patient leader.

Sophie is a very special little dog.   When one meets her, it is apparent and sad that she has lived four years without becoming accustomed to the love of human touch and contact.  She has a way of “wiggling” right into your heart.  She is a gentle dog with a sweet nature that will make someone a great companion and provide more love and pleasure than all the diamonds in the world.

Are you the lucky person who is willing to give of yourself and your time into loving this little girl?  You will not regret investing your love in Sophie, she will return it ten fold---guaranteed!!

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
