BIO:

A.J. was born from a breeder.  The breeder was going to give him and his brother up to a shelter, due to having shorter tails and longer legs than the other dachshunds in the litter.  A nice lady wasn't going to let that happened and adopted them both.  They grew up healthy in a loving home.  Unfortunately, the owner was diagnosed with cancer and she was given a short time to live. She turned A.J. & Bentley over to AADR hoping for them to find another loving home.

A.J.  is doing great at his new foster home and is used to going outside using the doggy-door.  He gets along well  with his other foster brothers but mostly plays with Bentley,  his birth brother. A.J. loves to play with toys and chase balls.  A.J. gets along with all dogs that have visted his foster home.  He loves sleeping with his humans, deep under the covers.  A.J. would be great with a family with  other small dogs in the house. He seems to do great with kids too.  If you are interested in 2 dogs, Bentley is available for adoption too.

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
