BIO (UPDATED  7/11/2016):

Shelby has come back into rescue due to some unknown issues with his previous owner. We think it must have been health related because that is the only reason we can think of that anyone would relinquish this fantastic dog.

It took Shelby literally about 5 minutes to adapt to his new foster home, which has three HIGHLY independent female doxies!! He has gotten along with them great. He is laid back and loves to be near his people. He does really well with his potty as long as you keep him on his schedule. He does well in his crate and is not food aggressive in any way. Whether he is an only dog or with other dogs, he will do great as he has a fantastic temperament. He is almost the perfect dog!!

Please give this gorgeous boy a chance by making him a part of your home. He is worth your consideration.

Shelby came to us from a kill shelter in Middle TN when his family turned him in for snapping at a couple of people and they didn’t want him back. We do believe they were abusive to him and that would be a reason for him to feel he had to defend himself. He was scared at the shelter where he’d been there for a couple weeks so it makes perfect sense that he’d not be a happy camper there either but our member used caution when getting him from the shelter and bringing him home. Once in the house and introducing him to all the other fosters he was perfectly fine and loves to be in his foster families laps.

Shelby is playful and loves the other younger dogs in the foster home, he will actually sleep in a puppy pile with them or huddle by the heat duct. He will need to be kept on a schedule but if taken out he will potty outside. He’s fine sleeping in a crate at night with just a few complaints but if he can see you he’s better. We also crate when we are leaving for a couple hours and he’s fine with that as well.

He did come to us very thin and we are working to get a couple lbs on him and feeding him some good food to shine up in coat. When that is done he’s going to be a beautiful dachshund. Because he did snap at a couple of people we are suggesting no kids and a fenced yard with another dog for him to play with and he’ll think he’s hit the doggie lotto!!

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
