BIO:  Rufus was given up because he has a high prey drive and he’s not good with toddlers. He’s fine with children over the age of 6 that understand a dog's space. With that being said, Rufus is a WONDERFUL dog! He’s sweet, friendly to strangers and a joy to foster. He likes to be on your lap in the evening when it’s TV time but other than that, he’s happy to follow you around the house.

We think he’d do better with an empty-nester than a young person who has to work since he came from a home with a stay-at-home mom so he’s not used to being left for long periods of time, but is fine with 2-4 hours.

We just can’t say enough good things about this guy! Rescues are thrilled when they find a dog with no issues. He has to have a fenced yard and no bunnies, cats, or rodents since they are all prey to him. Another dog around his age would be a plus. Please give Rufus his last home. He’s been in several in his young life, the next one we want to be his last.

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
