BIO: Meet Bandit, 

He was surrendered to AADR when his owner passed away and no one else in the family had room for him. Bandit has only ever known his one family and isn't quite sure what is going on. We assume Bandit was given complete run of the house and free to do as he chose because he came to us with an air of entitlement. Bandit has been with our local trainer for 2 weeks and here is what she has to say:

Bandit will only benefit from a strong family that knows how to provide proper leadership to a strong willed dachshund. It is recommended he go to a house with a fenced in yard (because during free time he LOVES to explore). Bandit likes the companionship of another dog (but no puppies please, he is older and just not a fan of the bouncing around). He is good with kids, but should only be adopted into a home with children over 11 (fast movements of little ones make him a bit nervous). We haven't seen any issues with cats so he would be fine in a home with cats. 

Bandit knows the following commands: sit, stay, come, wait, leave it, heel, and threshold (wait at the door). He is also completely crate trained & loves his crate. It is important that his forever home continue with his training and imply these commands on a daily basis. This shows him that you are the leader of the house and keeps him understanding he doesn't "run the show". Bandit is used to daily structured walks that should continue in his forever home. Whomever adopts Bandit should understand that he will need a little bit of time to warm up to you and his new surroundings. This doesn't give him the freedom to do what he wants during this time, he still has to obey the rules, but he may not want to be affectionate with his new family for a week or so. He is going to need a family that will move slow and be patient, but also have a leadership role in the relationship.

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
