BIO: Mabel is a senior miniature Dachshund girl, about 12 years young, and filled with love for the human race. A good citizen noticed her failed attempt to survive on the street, so he picked her up and brought her to the Little Rock shelter. She became an instant favorite of the animal control staff.

The veterinarian put Mabel on a special diet fitting for a small, emaciated dog, and she was ready to respond! Week-by-week she began to rebuild her body weight and her strength.  Within a week she was able to lift her head and stand up on her feet. A few weeks later was smiling and wagging her little tail. But the staff remained concerned that an adoption seemed unlikely due to her age.  With a very crowded shelter – well, we all know the not-so-great odds for senior dogs.

The magic of networking saved this special girl. A LR city shelter volunteer happens to be friends with an AADR Arkansas member. Phone calls were made, emails exchanged, and AADR knew Mabel needed us to step up and be her advocate, to help her find the next chapter in her doggy life. So, we accepted her into our rescue program.  When Mabel left the shelter building, the shelter staff all gathered in the front lobby to cheer and applaud, giving her hugs and kisses to celebrate her rescue.  It was obvious she had stolen their hearts.

About tiny little Mabel:  She weighs only 6 pounds, loves all humans, and she is calm with a very easy disposition.  Mabel is HW negative, appears to be house trained when kept on a schedule, and loves nothing more than to be near, and sometimes snuggle, with the one she’s with.  Mabel is missing all of her upper teeth, but that doesn’t stop her from enjoying each and every meal.  A soft diet is all she needs, except a new forever home. Mabel is very healthy now, no health issues, and has a very good and long life ahead of her. Maybe it’s precious Mabel who will make the perfect companion for you!

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
