BIO UPDATE FROM TOKI'S FOSTER MOM 6/7/2017:

NO CATS!

Toki is a very good little boy.  He integrated himself very quickly with our dogs and we have quite the mix – a grumpy old guy, a dominant female, a stand-offish female, and a goofy boxer. They all get along great.  Toki is a little submissive. He plays well with the boxer.  Toki takes treats nicely.  He will follow you all over.  He doesn’t mark, and has only had one potty accident. He is very good about going  to the door when he has to go potty and knows the "go potty" command.

Toki plays fetch well, and he loves small tennis balls but he can only have them during fetch or he will scalp them.  He also likes to de-stuff toys, so he is better off with sturdy toys or ones without stuffing.  Toki does not chew things other than his toys.  He loves walks, and is great on the leash.  He does have thin hair but it is coming in better with quality food.   Right now, he does get cold easily.  Toki needs some help settling down at night, but he just needs reminding a couple of times.  He is getting better, he just really wants to sleep in bed but he knows he is now allowed.  We are working on jumping up and overly enthusiastic lap greetings and he is improving in this area also.

Toki loves getting covered with blankets.  He is actually pretty quiet except when he's scared, or when you are leaving.   It appears that he can be trusted with just other dogs alone in house. He will really need a buddy, he has lots of energy and will need walks and some play.

Check out Toki's video below of him playing ball with his foster mom.

BIO:  Hi!  I came from VA where I had to be given up by my family because they were moving in with relatives.  I’m too nervous to be around small children and strangers coming in and out of my house all the time, so they felt it was best to turn me over to a rescue to find me a better home.

I’m not a bad guy, ya just gotta go slow with me and let me check you out.  I might bark some.  So, if you’ll just have your visitors give me a treat or two after they’ve been in the house for a bit, we’ll be best friends in no time.  The important thing is to not make a big deal out of it.  I am, after all, a Dachshund and Dachshund people know how we can be.  They said it would also be helpful if you are “Dachshund savvy” -  whatever that means.

I would love a fenced yard and another young Dachshund to play with because I can be quite playful.

I hope you’ll consider me for your next best friend.  But remember, I won’t be the perfect dachshund but I can learn if you’ll take time to work with me and teach me the things I need to know to be your best friend forever.

Love you… mean it!  -  Toki

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids, Good with Adults

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
